Get Out of Your Comfort Zone: 5 Ways to Break Out in Business & Life

At home and in the office, we measure ourselves by our successes. We can get in a rut sticking to the same methods and sometimes we need a little shake-up to get things going again. Bob Parsons knows this first hand, but there is a reason he starts his 16 rules for success with forcing a person to get out of their comfort zone in life and in business. Getting out of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be hard, but it will take a little oomph to get going.

Step Out

You can’t be a successful entrepreneur without doing some things that might make you a little uncomfortable at first. Practice getting out of your comfort zone. Entrepreneur.com recommends doing some fun things during your free time that will help you get more comfortable with breaking out. Some ideas include taking an improv class, asking someone to constructively criticize your work or home and switching places with someone who might have a more menial job than you — such as the receptionist.

Pump Yourself Up

Bob Parsons knows that it isn’t easy, but he also believes that nothing of significance will happen within your comfort zone. It might be a little uncomfortable for you to pat yourself on the back, but one way to get out of your comfort zone is to start talking to yourself the way you deserve to be talked to. Stop putting yourself down or shying away from the truth. If you are great at something, own that. You don’t have to send it out into the twittersphere, but take pride in it. Positive outlooks and the right motivation can get you through any day.

Lean & Mean (Well, Nice)

Eat healthy and live healthy. It’s true that it is easier, and oftentimes yummier, to grab that cheeseburger, fries and soda from the local fast food joint. But try something new — go to the local farmer’s market and pick a fresh fruit or vegetable you have never tried before. Having the right diet, rest and exercise can all help in keeping you healthy and moving. We all hit the skids at 2:30 in the afternoon, but feeling sluggish all day long is something nobody wants to feel, especially when trying to climb the corporate ladder.

Fear Factor

Even Indiana Jones was afraid of snakes. Business2Community recommends facing your fears as a way to help you break out of your comfort zone. The next time you are out in public, or even in your own home, and find yourself scared or afraid, face it head on. It might be something as simple as making a gutsy decorating move inside of your home, or something as intense as an investment. Every time you face a fear, your confidence in yourself will build and you will soon realize you can overcome just about anything.

Fun Run

Have you been interested in getting a little sporty and trying your hands (or feet) at running? It may not sound all too exciting –running at a moderate pace for long periods of time– but lacing up some sneakers for a charity run can throw a little excitement into anyone’s life. Since the weather is growing more enjoyable every day, these fun runs fill the calendar. With colorful 5K’s to Tough Mudder marathons popping up everywhere from Indianapolis to San Diego, getting your run on can liven your life in more ways than one.
