Want a New Job (Or to Move Up)? Proof is Required.

Often, people who are looking for jobs in Indianapolis reach out to me. They want advice about how to find a job, or sometimes just suggestions on how they can get a better job at the company where they already are.

I always ask the same question: “What do you have that shows what you can do?”

Or as attorneys call it, do you have any “clear and convincing evidence?”

Let’s start by reviewing things that people often say when they are looking for a job, but are nearly worthless:

  • I’m a hard worker
  • I’m good at solving problems
  • I covered this in some of my classes in school
  • I have lots of experience
  • I’ve got background in the field
  • I’m passionate about the industry
  • I’m dedicated and focused

Many of these are bad because they are things that apply to every professional. But most of them are bad because they don’t actually prove anything.

Sure, you might have taken a course that is related to the topic you do. But can you actually apply that material? Is it still current?

Instead of talking about what you do, show what you do. Write an article for the company newsletter or a for a trade publication. Work on a side project and stick it in your portfolio. Volunteer for a non-profit and do what you do for you industry. Give a lunch-and-learn to teach other people.

Prove you can do it! Evidence trumps hearsay, every time. Don’t say what you can do. Just do it. And if asked, show what you’ve done.
