How to Get a Telecommuting Job

Once in a while you run across a blog post that needed to be written. Jason Morwick, who is an author and writes for The Virtual Leader blog, put together a post advising readers on how to get a work-from-home professional job.

The whole post is worth a read, but the opening includes an essential warning:

Job seekers should be leery of advertisements on the internet offering you 100% flexibility and the ability to work from home fulltime. Most of those ads are scams and will not lead you anywhere.

That may make it seem like working from home is nearly impossible. But the numbers say the opposite. According to a piece from Flexjobs, over 13 million Americans were working from home at least one day per week in 2010. Nationwide, about one in ten people telecommute for part of their job. The Telework Research Network reports “2.6% of the U.S. employee workforce (3.3 million people, not including the self-employed or unpaid volunteers) considered home their primary place of work.”

But back to the advice from Jason Morwick:

Many employers don’t advertise their flexible work arrangements. You may not find out about their specific policies until you are well into the interview process. Alternatively, companies may be flexible on their location requirements if they find the right candidate. Once you find an attractive job opening do a little research on the company to see if the company has flexible work options. It’s even better if you can network with people that work or have worked at the company and find out directly what’s offered internally.

    Excellent post! A telecommuting job best fits to mothers who had to look after their babies. I would recommend everyone to choose telecommuting careers as it helps you maintain balance with work and home more effectively and also be more productive than that while commuting.
