Clean Your Desk, Change Your Future

Robby

You wouldn’t think that a clean desk would really matter much. If you know what you’re doing, why does it matter whether your workspace is pristine or dirty? It turns out that there are two critical changes that happen when you have a clean desk.

There’s lots of advantages to having a clean workspace. You’ll make your mother happy when she comes to visit. You’ll be able to find things faster, at least in theory. You can avoid doing “real work” while cleaning up. But none of these may be all that compelling. After all, you’ve got tons to do.

But there are two outcomes that will happen if you clean your desk:

You will change your perspective on what you have to do

When your space is a mess, it’s easy to get distracted. There are piles everywhere of potential activity. There are receipts to be processed, papers to read, files to file, and lots of stuff to trash. You may have an active project, but every other project will draw your attention.

When you have a clean desk, you will have just one item in front of you.

You will change everyone else’s perspective on what you are doing

People with clean desks are people who are focused. They are someone who you can be confident will give your project the attention it deserves. People with a clean workspace are ready to work.

Stop what you’re doing and take a few minutes to clean up. It might just change your life, especially if you can keep it up.
