The Three Types of Jobs

When jobseekers here in Indianapolis approach me for advice, I often try to figure out which of the three kinds of jobs they want. Because, there are only three kinds, and most people don’t know that.

These categories aren’t defined by the Department of Labor or a checkbox on the application. They aren’t something you learned about in school or that will appear in flashing letters on the job posting online. It’s just something which emerges when you start to talk to jobseekers (which is something I do lot.)

Here they are:

1. Jobs That Solely Require Work Ethic

There are tons of positions out there which are designed for the type of person who works hard and gets things done and doesn’t necessarily have any other qualifications. Of course, you can’t mention you have these in an interview. But lucky for you, employers feel that it’s incredibly hard to find people with a good work ethic these days.

2. Jobs That Require a Special Credential

There are some positions for which you absolutely must have the appropriate requirements. You cannot be a lawyer unless you’ve passed the bar, and in most states (including Indiana) you can’t take the bar exam without going to law school. The same goes for being a doctor, a nurse, or a mental health therapist. If your job requires government clearance you must have the appropriate level of clearance. For these positions, getting the credential is the essential hurdle.

3. Jobs That Are About What The Employer Wants

Finally, some opportunities are simply about impressing the employer in the application process and the job interview. You could have an advanced college degree or no schooling whatsoever. You might have a glowing letter of recommendation or you might have worked on a project that was somewhat famous. You might have decades of experience or be filled with fresh ideas. Whatever the employer wants is what you need to have.

Why This Matters

It’s essential to understand the three kinds of jobs because they require three extremely different strategies. To get work-ethic jobs the secret is hustle. Be eager. Show up early to interviews. Follow up immediately. Be positive and devoted. Show you’re ready to work and willing to whatever it takes. In many positions, a hard working person is all that’s needed because the employer believes they haven’t had that for a while. That’s how you get job type #1.

For special-credential jobs the secret is right in the name. Don’t even bother until you get that taken care of. These are usually acronyms like PMP, CCNA, Ed.D, CNA, AAPC, LCSW, etc. Some you can get in a weekend of studying and others take years. If your field has certifications and you want a job in that field, this is one great route to consider.

For employer-values jobs the secret is reconnaissance. You have to find out what the hiring manager cares about. It might well be the case that this job is actually of type #1 or #2, which will change your strategy. But if the hiring manager is looking for someone with a particular attitude or approach or behavioral style, that is information you need to use if you want that job.

Get Out There

If you’re looking for work, do the research. And also, do some introspection. Think about which kind of job appeals to you and use that in your preparation. And as always, good luck!
