Every Professional Needs a Non-Employer Professional Email Address

Robby

You absolutely cannot survive in the modern professional world without an email address. Everybody knows that. You’ll get things emailed to you all the time, and people will ask you for it all the time.

If you’re a jobseeker, it’s even more essential. But most people don’t think about it all that much, and how it impacts them

The Worst Free Email Accounts

Perception is reality. You can get a free email account from AOL. You can get one from Hotmail. You can get one from your Internet Service Provider (rr.com, sbcglobal.net, etc.) But as many experts say, you shouldn’t do that:

Career advice books and websites encourage job seekers to use not only their own names in an email address, but to choose domains wisely. Unless you have a custom domain connected to an elite alma mater or a professional website that hiring managers will find irresistible, Gmail is preferred.

But job hunting with an AOL address? Leave that back in 1998.

The Best Email Account is on Your Own Domain

Our friends at the FirstSiteGuide have a great article about creatin your own email account. They write:

It doesn’t matter if you’re a blogger or a business owner – a custom email address will set you apart from competitors. If you’re looking for a job, a custom email address will differentiate you from other prospects. If you’re a blogger, you’ll want to use networking to create a strong brand image and build a distinguished online reputation. Having a personalized email address will help you accomplish this, as it will help you stand out from other bloggers in your niche.

Don’t Forget Your Email Signature

If you have a personal email account, you want to make sure you also have at least one email signature. Think of this as letterhead for yourself. Include your name. Include your phone number. Include an inspirational quote if you like. But have something other than the end of your message.

Email is important! Make yours stand out.
