Indiana Unemployment: What Can We Do?

Guest Blogger

The U.S has some best job opportunities in the world, but what states are the best to work in? According to US News, Indiana is ranked 25/50 with a unemployment rating of 3.2% as of March 2018.

This competes well with every other state, and may seem like a small number. Though if we do the math Indiana has a population of 6.6 million. I rounded this to 6 million and rounded the 3.2% to 3%. After doing the calculations I concluded that it leaves 180,000. Factoring our children, home moms, and retired people, I concluded that there is around 70,000 plus people that are unemployed in Indiana.

That’s a large number and it’s something that is quite worrisome. If we can fix it; or at least put a dent in it, it’ll boost the economy greatly.

However, we have to put in consideration that there may be people who don’t want jobs and there’s nothing we can do to fix that. To those who do want jobs there is only one option: Open up more job spaces. This might seem insignificant, but if we can open up more spaces in our companies, work places and more it will slowly dwindle down that number. Although there is also the idea of expanding, I don’t feel as that would be as effective as filling up jobs spaces, it would save money as well. As you may or may not know, Indiana is or had a major worker shortage. To fix that as well we just need to open up more and reach out to the people that need these jobs. The way I see it is that this can work if we do it right, and it will work well.

Another element is job training. If people don’t have the skills needed to help companies grow, those companies will be forced to find other places to expand.

That’s how I believe we can fix another minor problem of Indiana. Like I said earlier, this isn’t a major problem as Indiana has one of the better unemployment ratings in America, but it’s one we can’t ignore.
